Healthy Living

Dunn Street Residences strive to provide healthy living by including in its design features that promote healthy living. The Residences will provide many shared spaces in the building for the residents to socialize and give a reason to get out of their living area and mingle with fellow residents. Common facilities like a community room, exercise room, sauna and hot tubs would be excellent places to mingle with other residents and maintain healthy living.

Data shows that chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease are the leading causes of death in Canada. It is disturbing that in 2011, almost 2.7 million or 1 in 10 Canadians 20 years and older were living with diabetes.

The rising rates of type II diabetes are indicators of poor health. They are linked with higher rates of other diseases and conditions resulting partly from inadequate physical activity. We can reduce the rates of type II diabetes and other chronic diseases by integrating healthy living into our daily lives, which we can achieve, in part, by designing and redesigning our communities.

Improving the opportunity to bike, walk or take public transit to work or school by changing the built environment is a healthy treat that Dunn Street Residences promote. Fortunately, the Dunn Street Residences strive to incorporate a built environment that could significantly influence its residents’ daily physical activity. The Residences location enables design features – a mix of residential, commercial, educational and employment areas, bike paths, and public transit. The world-renowned falls, and green spaces, walking paths, trails, and recreation facilities can promote residents’ recreational physical activity.

The Dunn Street neighbourhood provides easy access to healthier food options, shopping, recreational activities, schooling and leisure activities at a short walking distance.

Physical activities and healthy living

Globally, physical inactivity causes 6% to 10% of non-communicable diseases. Moderate physical activity in a day can decrease the risk of premature death by at least 19%. It also helps better muscle strength, cardiovascular function and mental health.
